My Immortal, Book one of the Immortal series by J.K. Coi

Immortal Series Book 1: My Immortal by J.K. Coi
Publisher: Linden Bay Romance
Genre: Paranormal

Summary: Rhys, an immortal warrior on the hunt for a demon is plagued by dreams of a human female named Amy, whom he finally encounters when she witnesses a bizarre fight. She reports it to the police, not knowing she's unleashing unearthly havoc for herself in the process…coming to her aid is Rhys, who has sworn to focus on his life's work of demon-hunting. He has always believed sex and love muddy the waters, but finds his feelings for Amy rival his overwhelming desire for revenge…

My Review: This very long book borrows heavily from the Highlander movies and TV series (even Rhys' murdered partner is named Duncan!) and the comparison is not always flattering.

Highlander and other stories of the warrior ilk are essentially action pieces that move very fast. My Immortal with its serpent goddesses, scheming humans, demented demons and burgeoning love story should also move along at a ripping pace, but does not. Even the opening scene with Rhys looking for a pair of jeans to wear should take a couple of lines but goes on for pages.

It's troubling to read a story with remarkably similar material in an already established franchise: even Rhys' “B” storyline of training Baron, an unwilling new immortal recruit is identical to the Duncan/Richie storyline of Highlander.

What does work and is ultimately the saving grace and the heart of all this paranormal angst is a love story. Rhys is your typical, tortured hero who rescues a damsel in distress and their tale is convincing in the romantic scenes, not so much when Amy discovers two demons duking it out and rambles on for pages about it…and still stays rooted to the spot!

Would a witness to a crime really spend a crucial amount of time ruminating on nonsense - or be running like crazy to get away from there? This story is littered with moments like this that make the reader stop and question the actions of the protagonists, therefore removing them from the story.

Though Rhys comes across as a little too placid to be a warrior, his moments with Amy really make up for some of the many long pages the reader must wade through to enjoy their banter…and their hot and spicy romance.

Rated three Delightful Divas by A.J.!
