Clippings by A.J. Mirag
Publisher: Lulu.com
Genre: GLBT, M/M

Summary: Unfairly arrested and charged with the murder of a police officer, Daniel has been jailed indefinitely until trial. A Brazilian prison is a terrible place to lose his innocence. Daniel would have lost more than that — perhaps even his life — if not for Mephisto, his cellmate.
"Clippings" is the story of the challenges faced by a middle class young man in prison, and his relationship with a dark, mysterious man who seems eager to protect him, but who might have his own inscrutable plans...
My Review: When I first chose to read Clippings, I wasn’t so sure that I would enjoy it, but I wanted to give it a fair chance. Then I began reading and before I knew it, I was nearly finished and hadn’t put it down once.
Clippings is set inside a Brazilian prison. I was quite surprised by the complexity of the social society inside the prison. It is such a horrible place and there are so many rules and a whole set of words the prisoners use to describe common things and people. Daniel had so much to learn and he was lucky to have been chosen by Mephisto. I can't imagine what would have become of him otherwise.

Daniel is a young, naïve college student who does a lot of changing and growing up under the tutelage of Mephisto and the Professor. His fear and near disgust of Mephisto was just as tangible to me as the emotion and passion he begins to feel for him. Despite their circumstances, they managed to have a very real relationship, complete with intense emotions.
Mephisto is a smart and caring man who has lived the life of a criminal through necessity. I wasn’t sure that I would like him in the beginning, but he turned out to be the best character in the book. The Professor is still just a little puzzling to me. I can’t decide if he is a good guy or not. He is a genius and I think he is kind of in the middle of good and bad. I think that Mephisto feels trapped by the Professor, yet at the same time, he cares about the Professor and is loyal to him.
The ending leaves me guessing at just what is going to happen, so a sequel would be so very nice. Clippings is, more than anything, a book that I won’t soon forget. I recommend this book to anyone, even those that normally do not care for GLBT.

I felt the same way about this book, Melissa. I was so uncertain I would like it, with the dark themes it seemed to have, that I chose not to review it. Looks like I'll have to go out and buy it now. Thanks for the review.

It was a great book, A.J.!
Jaime, there is a dark undertone throughout the book, because of the setting and circumstances. Even a couple darker scenes. But they were not enough to turn me away from the fact that this was a well-written book with excellent characters and a deep emotional relationship.
