By Chance by Cat Grant
Publisher: Lyrical Press
Genre: M/M, Erotic

Summary: For Eric and Nick, it's irritation at first sight.
Wealthy, arrogant Eric Courtland is an island unto himself ... and content to stay that way until chance brings quarterback Nick Thompson into his life. Nick's warm and easy nature pierce straight through Eric's well-fortified defenses and coax him out of his shell.
It doesn't take long for their friendship to deepen into love. Eric's fear of commitment and Nick's inability to come to terms with his own sexuality threaten to tear them apart.
My Review: This is the third installment in Cat Grant’s Courtland Chronicles series. I hadn’t read any of the other books, at the time of reviewing this, but it definitely works as a stand-alone title.
This story is actually a prequel to the first two books since it sets up Eric’s future love/sex triangle with Ally and Nick, both of whom become the most important loves of his life. As a study of confused sexual identity and romantic angst, it’s convincing and gritty.
Having not read the other stories, I am now anxious to do so. Cat Grant sets up a tried-and-true premise by having the two protagonists at odds from page one. However, the increasingly tangled web she weaves is wholly original and very involving.
Nick might be incapable of admitting he’s gay, but Eric, too, wavers in his commitment to him…and to men. There is more than a hint of attraction between him and Ally that is explored in the other books.
Eric’s haughty ways belie a tough upbringing and serious emotional issues, not helped when he is attacked by a guy he thinks he’s picking up for casual sex. Not wanting to give away more, I’ll just say this is a provocative, contemporary love story, which pulls you in, even if it won’t necessarily warm your tootsies or your romantic fantasies like an evening in front of a toasty fire. No, sir.
If, by chance, you like love convoluted, colored frequently outside the lines, very hot and just a little--well, a lot--unforgettable, then this is the book for you.
Rated Four delightful Divas by A.J. Llewellyn!
