The Devil's Scream by Stephanie Barmann
Publisher: Lyrical Press
Genre: Paranormal/Horror

Summary: When the devil screams, will Emma fight the call?
The Seneca Indians believe The Cave of Evil Spirits is the gateway to hell. Emma Carney and her friends learn they might just be right -- Emma escapes the cave with her life, a scar and a rattlesnake bite, but that's only the beginning of her struggle between good and evil.
The locals think she's crazy until Jared comes into her life. He seems to hold the answers to the cave's many mysteries, and promises to help rid the cave of evil. Will he succeed, or perish with her?
My Review: There are reasons why I love Stephen King, he has a way of scaring the crap out of you, but you want more. Over the years I have tried to find another author who could replicate that horrid scream that fills your chest. I think I have found my new Stephen King, and her name is Stephanie Barmann.
I know I have a habit of throwing movies into my reviews, but on this particular book I couldn’t help but think of Poltergeist. I know David is supposed to be young and attractive, but in my
mind he is the old man that sings “God is in his holy temple, little ones be silent now.” I shiver every time I think about it and now I will shiver every time I think of Ms. Barmann’s book, The Devil’s Scream.
When we meet Emma, she has been tortured for almost two years, nothing that she sees is real and you begin to wonder if maybe she really is crazy. When she meets Nate, I began to wonder if maybe there was something more to him. She tells him about what has happened to her, but unlike everyone else, he stays and tells her he believes. I believe that should have been Emma’s first clue something was up, I mean if someone said look this is what happened to me, I think I might have questioned her sanity, but that’s just me.
As the story unfolds we also meet Jared, and the contrast of mannerisms between the two male characters begin to twirl and plunge you into the grit of the story. At first I wasn’t sure if Jared was the hero or just a priest who would scream “The power of Christ compels you!” While Emma spews pea soup pulling a Linda Blair and Nate sits next to her begging for it all to stop. I guess I was wrong, huh Ms. Barmann.
I really don’t want to give anything away; seriously. I think this book is better read with no knowledge of what is about to happen to you. The scene description is amazing, the spirits are beautiful and the tortured souls are hard to read about. I have sat here reading this story stopping every so often to look over my shoulder to make sure they are not behind me. AND I LOVE IT!!!!!
It has been too long since I have read a book that has completely scared the crap out of me. I have sat in my room with the lights off reading this story and regretted it. I know I can reach up and switch the light back on, but why? Isn’t this what a truly amazing paranormal/horror story should be about? Shouldn’t it tantalize all of your senses? Make you cringe when your home settles and it pops and groans?? I think it is.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good ghost story, its invigorating, challenging, and heart stopping. The Devil's Scream is a fast pace ride that will leave you breathless. Oh and uh the little twist at the end, just made it all worth reading again.
There is nothing in this story I would change or ask for more of, maybe a sequel or something, but nothing more than that. So if you are in the mood for a devilish good time, along with a couple of nightmares, then The Devil's Scream is the book for you!
