A Princely Gift by Claire Thompson
Publisher: Romance Unbound
Genre: Erotic, GLBT, M/M, Historical, YAOI, Light BDSM

Summary: Set in Ancient Japan, two young men, separated by the nearly impassable boundaries of class and station, come together in a powerful liaison of sexual exploration and passion. With the delicate restraint of a Japanese ink painting on silk, this is a love story between men who dare to defy convention as they fulfill their romantic destiny.
My Review: I had no idea what to expect from A Princely Gift because I have never read a YAOI book before. However, having read Claire Thompson’s work several times in the past, I was certain that it would be an enjoyable read. I was not disappointed!

Claire’s writing voice never fails to draw me in on the first page and hold me captive until the last page. A Princely Gift was no exception. Ms. Thompson is a master at creating the most endearing of characters. I fell in love with both of these sensitive, caring men. Their relationship may be forbidden and misunderstood by most, but that didn’t stop them from finding one another and beginning a beautiful, sweet journey of love.
A Princely Gift is a short novella at only 40 pages, and is set in Ancient Japan. I found the descriptions of people and places to be just what I imagined for that time period. The dialogue and behavior between characters were also appropriate. Each scene flowed seamlessly into the next.
The only flaw that I could find is that the story is so short, yet covers a large amount of time. I can only imagine that this book would have been even more compelling had it been longer.
If you have ever read Claire before and are considering A Princely Gift, I recommend that you go ahead and add it to your TBR list. If you haven’t read her work before, then this book can be a nice way to get acquainted with Ms. Thompson’s ability to create a touching story of love and commitment between two exceptional characters.
