The Quickening by Antonia Tirath

The Quickening by Antonia Tirath
Publisher: Eternal Press
Genre: Sci-Fi

Summary:
Aer was my best friend in high school. Okay, I had a huge crush on him. Then he disappeared. But, now he's back and he's in some kind of trouble. He needs my help. I should say no, just on principle, but he's too cute to resist.

Did I mention Aer is a dragon?

Having a dragon for a boyfriend might not be a bad thing. Of course, first I have to help him rescue his brother--and save the Rikashi, an entire race of dragon shifters.

My Review: I honestly didn’t know what to expect when I started The Quickening by Antonia Tirath. I have to tell you, to my delight, this book reels you in from the first chapter and keeps you moving at a rapid pace. Before you know it, you’re done. The anticipation builds so well, you will want to know what’s going to happen next (psssst.... There are more books in this series. So never fear, you will get to know more!). And the sweet romance between Aer and Josephine is fun to watch as well. Their romance builds from something sweet and innocent and culminates into a relationship that can stand the test of time.

My one complaint isn’t even about the book itself. A blurb is so important to a book because it is the first instance that the reader gets to come in contact with the energies of a book. Blurbs can entice or repel; however, this book’s blurb really did neither. I’m not sure I would have picked up The Quickening after just reading the blurb and that would have been a mistake. If there is a way for Ms. Tirath to enhance this blurb, I think that would go a long way to entice readers. To all those readers out there reading this review, don’t let the blurb stop you from buying this book. The world that Ms. Tirath created is definitely worth the read.

The chapters are organized as a back and forth between the main characters; one chapter in Josephine’s voice, the next in Aer’s voice. It took a little getting used to at first, but I think, overall it really worked for this book. To be able to hear what both Aer and Josephine thought and felt while going through the events in this book really assisted me in getting into their heads and hearts. These characters come from such diverse backgrounds, with loyalties and allegiances to their varied dragon and human cultures.

If you’re looking for a book that keeps you moving, interested, and wondering what will happen next, all the while, showing you the development of a sweet romance, then this book is for you. I definitely look forward to reading the next book in Ms. Tirath’s Rikashi Series.

Rated 4 1/2 Delightful Divas by Jen!
