Feature Friday: Beth D. Carter

Good Morning and welcome to our Feature Friday! Our guest today is Beth D. Carter. She recently had her first book published, Black Leather Pants, and I had the pleasure of reviewing it.

About Beth:

I’ve just started a new job, so my days lately have been a little off. I work in Baton Rouge at a local medical center in the O.R., so my day starts really early. Thank goodness for coffee!

I am the typical writer who started reading romance books at a young age, started writing my own stories, and gets lost in my own little world I create in my head. My inspiration comes from everywhere and I like to change up what I write to make sure my stories don’t stagnate. My first novel, Black Leather Pants, is a contemporary, but I just turned in a manuscript that is a futuristic/fantasy story, and right now I am writing a space romance. So, just when you think you have me pegged, I throw something different at you!

As a reader, there are so many different genres I love. My favorite authors are Lisa Kleypas, Julia Quinn, Stephanie Meyers, JK Rowland, Amber Carlton, Maya Banks, Judith Tarr, Lisa McMann, and Charlaine Harris.

I wrote Black Leather Pants when I lived in Paris, in 2004. Every day I would get up and visit some part of the city and when I came home in the evening, I would write it down. Paris is an amazing city, beautiful and alive and so old. Every time I went into the Notre-Dame I just sat in it crying because I could feel the history of it seeping into me. I’ve been fortunate to have traveled all throughout Western Europe, Scandinavia, Australia and New Zealand.

I have a funny little tidbit about my character names. My hero, Kiley Laurent, acquired his first name from a Japanese manga that I loved titled Peach Girl, and his last name came from my French landlord!

Black Leather Pants by Beth D. Carter
Publisher: Siren-Bookstrand
Genre: Erotic Romance

Summary: Small town girl Penny Varlet has moved to Los Angeles to pursue her love of art. Her boss, Kiley Laurent, is a sinfully sensual man who finds his way into her erotic dreams. One night, while working late, they act on their impulse and share a moment of raw passion.

Circumstances continue to throw them together, until one night, while working late, Penny is attacked by an intruder and hurt. Kiley whisks her away to Paris to heal, showing her a world of art and wonder. As she heals, can Penny put the anger over her attack to rest and find the courage to act on her love for Kiley?

Excerpt:
Kiley pushed from his lean and moved to sit in the chair in front of herdesk. "Will you talk with me?"

Uh oh. The talk. Was she ready for this? Did she have a choice?

She nodded and thought she saw him let out a relieved breath. He folded his hands together across his stomach. He looked calm and collected.

"This morning was...."

Unexpected? A mistake? Circumstantial? Pretty fucking good?

"...Pretty fucking good," he finished.

She blinked. Did she think that out loud? Obviously not, since he continued talking.

"I've spent all day thinking about the other night, and now this morning, about the reasons why it's a bad idea for this to have happened. I'm your boss. You're my employee. Yada yada yada." He raked a hand through his elegantly styled hair. "But I want you to know that I won’t let this interfere with our working relationship."

That was exactly what she wanted hear. Wasn't it? If so, why did she suddenly feel so hollow inside?

"Penny?" he prompted.

She smiled widely, and if it seemed a bit too over bright, he didn't comment. "Wonderful. I'm so glad you think that way. I've been thinking things over and I figured out it had to be the pants."

He blinked. Clearly he wasn’t tying to two incidences together. "The pants?"

She flicked a finger at him. "Those black leather pants." She shook her head. "When I see them on you, I just want to molest you right out of them. And God help me for the honesty bug that's bitten me."

My Review: Black Leather Pants is Beth D. Carter’s first published book. It is an erotic romance, and most of the book is set in France. The authors vivid descriptions of France, combined with her obvious knowledge of art and France, made this an interesting book, filled with facts. That isn’t to say that the facts became a boring tell-all, but were incorporated into the story to enrich it in a brilliant way.

I really liked Penny. She is a small-town girl who has moved to the big city, and she also has self-esteem issues. Black Leather Pants tells her story of growth and self-discovery. I was well pleased with her changes.

Kiley is an eccentric French man. He is hot, intelligent, and successful, and his sense of style leans toward the French side, making him stand out in an American crowd. He had some major issues with relationships because of a previous heart-break, and his odd behavior at times was enough to drive me crazy. However, in the end of things, he is a great guy who got a great girl.

Beth D. Carter is an author to watch. I look forward to reading her future books, because I am sure that her talent and skills will only flourish as she continues to publish new titles.

Great interview and excerpt!

Beth- out of all of the places that you have been, what is your favorite? I don't hardly travel at all, so it is fun for me to hear about other wonderful places!

OH - I'm glad I read this review. I love a story with good scene setting and interesting back drops - France and art - sounds great. I will add it to my TBR pile. (which is getting quite large by the way.)

Hi Amy M!

This is a hard question (Paris obviously!) but the place that stands out to me the most is Stockholm. Daybreak was at 2am, sunset at 11pm, there was a biting chill in the air and we took a cruise from Sweden to Finland. It was really romantic. My second favorite place was Rome, because my family is Roman, and the history of the city was breath-taking. Thanks for the question!

Hi Beth! First of all, I'm so jealous that you've lived in Paris and visited so many other wonderful places.

What kind of work were you doing in Paris and was it conducive to romance writing?

Hi Deidre!

I was extremely fortunate to actually do nothing while in Paris! (Doesn't that sound decadent?) I discovered a love of football (or soccer)while over there, because the only place I could understand anyone was in the English Pub not too far away from my apartment! Lol!

Beth:you said that most or all genres draw you, how do you keep focused in the current genre your you are writing in when say a scifi incident trickles into your mind and it could work in your book but may ultimately change it from your original "blueprint"? Can you keep whats known as "tunnel vision" and not let that element in and envariably save it for another book? or does it destract and slow down your creative juices? Thanks for your time, Johanna

Hi Johanna!

Sometimes it's very hard to stay focused on a story when others start screaming at you. LOL! I've been writing this space love story for ages now because things aren't falling into place. But when that happens, when I know the characters aren't happy with the direction it's going, then I put it aside and focus on something else. But it's always there. I just finished a historical and the space story is knocking once more. Most of the time I write down the plot of something I thought of, and then when I have time I go back to it to try to think it out. If not, the idea is at least down on paper somewhere! -Beth

Hi Anna!

Thank you very much! My whole life, all I've ever wanted to do, is write. But unless you're ready to be the starving artist, then having a day job you enjoy is the key to everything. Fortunately, I found something I enjoy doing in the medical field, and it actually gave me a story idea for a future book! LOL! Take care! -Beth
