Summary:
Your words cut, leaving me a tatter.
But you're whispering to me in the night,
Whispering to me that I still matter

Alin found a passion in life. Singing makes him happy. Now he he just has to find the one man he loves and win him back.
____________

After the war, they just fell in together, like it was meant to be. They'd saved each other's lives and sanity. They hadn't really talked about plans. Peace had just been too far away.

Then they fell apart. They didn't talk about separating. They didn't talk about not being in love anymore. Their paths just went in different directions.

Alin still loves Jody, and he's found his voice now. When he goes from singing on the street corner to the cusp of making it big, all he really wants is for Jody to hear him.
All he really wants is for them to come back together.

Jaime's Review: Like all Nix Winter's stories, it took me a paragraph or two to get into the flow of the lyrical prose and wrap myself around the twists of language. Reading Winter's books is always a refreshing challenge. The way words are laid out always fascinates me. No one writes quite like Winter and that in itself makes these stories well worth the read. Add that fine spin of words to the strong characters and you have a story I can get behind.

Alin seems like a frail, easily damaged human being, and everyone around him seems to think he needs protection. I wonder, though, having survived a war and a failed relationship that seems to still mean so much to him, how weak he really is. His inner strength comes through the minute he realizes he knows what he really wants in life and goes after it. That pursuit also highlights his arguable lack of common sense, but no one is perfect.

Jody, I think, wants to present to the world as a tough, uncaring man who can do anything he needs to do to survive. It isn't an illusion that lasts very long, however. The minute Alin needs him; he crosses continents to be his hero.

If I have one complaint about this story, it's just to wonder why they separated in the first place. The reasons seem rather thin to me, considering the power of the emotions that bring them back together. The action builds and crashes rather quickly, and mostly off stage, but the real focus of this story is Alin's ability to find his own strength to do the things he loves and let go of a past that wasn't doing him any good.

My Recommendation: Read this story for the rhythm and sensuous turns of phrase that perfectly suit Alin's musician character and his quest to stand on his own, and claim the love he deserves.
