Summary: Nine years ago Kate Grayhawk Pendleton walked into Wyatt Shaw's life--and out of it the next morning. Now Wyatt's back -- and has the power to shatter Kate's future with the man she loves.
By reputation, Wyatt Shaw is a brutal killer who always gets what he wants. And he wants Kate and her twin eight-year-old sons.
Texas Ranger Jack McKinley is hot on Wyatt Shaw's trail. The presumed heir to the D'Amato crime syndicate is threatening to steal the woman he loves.
Holly McKinley is fighting to keep Jack from leaving her for another woman. Now the secret she's kept for over twenty years may save their son's life....and cost her the only man she's ever loved.
Melissa’s Review: Shattered is the eighth installment in the Bitter Creek Series by Joan Johnston. I was unaware of this fact before reading Shattered, and while I do wish I had read the previous seven books in this series first, this title is fine as a standalone. There are several characters that appear or are mentioned in this story, and each time I got the feeling they had probably appeared previously. I am sure followers of this series will enjoy meeting back up with characters they have come to know and love.
This is my first experience with Joan Johnston. She has a nice writing voice, and the book moves along at a fast, smooth pace. I will say that this book had a lot going on, too much at times. There are several subplots in Shattered, and it seemed that they almost overshadowed the main plot, rather than adding to it. The main plot would have been enough to satisfy me, without the interference from the other stuff going on.
Shattered is filled with action, suspense, and emotion. I was drawn in by Kate and Wyatt more than the secondary characters. However, as with the subplots, the secondary characters, Jack and Holly, very nearly overtook the book. I did enjoy each and every character, as they were well-written, realistic people, and were easy to connect with. Not only that, but the secondary characters and their respective subplots were each interesting. I would imagine if this book were split out into a couple, so that the sub plots could be drawn out into longer stories, it would make for a fantastic couple of books.
Overall, I did enjoy this book and would like to read the other books in the Bitter Creek Series, as well as any other books by Joan Johnston. I am sure followers of this series will be very happy with Shattered.
