Twilight by Ally Blue

Twilight by Ally Blue
Publisher: Samhain Publishing
Genre: Erotic Paranormal, GLBT M/M

Summary:
While leading an amateur ghost-hunting expedition in Asheville, NC, Bay City Paranormal is called to investigate Sunset Lodge, a rustic inn situated on a remote Smoky Mountain peak. In recent weeks, employees and guests alike have seen a weird, frightening creature in the forest near the lodge. A creature which sounds all too familiar to the BCPI team.

Sam Raintree doesn’t want to deal with another interdimensional gateway. The last one they faced nearly took the life of Sam’s employer and lover, Dr. Bo Broussard, and Sam can’t stand the thought of it happening again. Especially now that he and Bo are finally together and working through their problems. But Sam’s psychokinetic abilities give him the power to permanently close the gateways, and he can’t bring himself to ignore that. With the safety of the Sunset Lodge staff and guests at stake, Sam, Bo and their colleague, Dean Delapore, make the trip to the Lodge to determine if it indeed hosts a portal to another dimension.

Once at Sunset Lodge, a missing man, a grisly discovery and a moment of carelessness converge to reveal secrets much different—and far uglier—than any the BCPI team expected. Secrets which not only put their lives in danger, but which might provide Sam with an escape from the portals. If he’s willing to take it.

My Review:
This third installment of Blue's Bay City Paranormal Investigations series was entertaining, if not quite so gripping as the first two books. Perhaps because the mystery element was fairly tame in this book, I found it didn't hold my attention as determinedly as the others. That isn't to say it isn't a good book. I enjoyed it. The focus in this book was most definitely on the relationship between Sam and Bo, and sets up a whole new issue for them to fight about.

What's most interesting is that even when you might think further impediments to a couple's happiness would be artificial and contrived; Blue manages to make the conflict real and sympathetic, while keeping the characters believable, and the relationship interesting. It also sets up so many potential pitfalls for the rest of the series that it's impossible not to keep reading.

My Recommendation: This was a bit of a break from the intensity of the firt two books, but not a dull read by any means. Pick it up, but know you'll probably want to read the first two books first. They're well worth it.

She agrees, thinking he is too unsophisticated to suit her, besides as soon as the danger has passed she was leaving Loving.

My Review: This story takes place in the late 1800's where passions ran wild and appetites were full filled.

I cannot say enough about this book. Renee Michaels is nothing short of amazing! She holds you captive with the suspense of battle to save one’s true love. On the other side of the coin, she wets your appetite for unspeakable passion.

Come take a gamble on Jake and Cat. I can guarantee you; it will leave you completely flushed.

Question Renee:

J Morgan
writes such a brilliantly fun story. I often wonder what goes on in an author’s mind as I read their books. I have a feeling J Morgan will have me checking my door for Pixies.

Woman of Honor by Nicole Zoltack

Woman of Honor by Nicole Zoltack
Publisher: Desert Breeze
Genre: Fantasy

Summary:
Aislinn of Bairbhe dreams of becoming a lady knight to honor the death of her fallen brother. To her mother's horror, King Patrick grants Aislinn's wish and she begins her long years of training.

Despite the mockery of the other pages, and the disdain of Prince Caelan who also trains to be a knight, Aislinn commits herself to her dreams and embarks on a journey of self-discovery and bravery. Through the years, Aislinn and Caelan grow from sparing classmates to good friends. They both know that someday Caelan will marry for the sake of the kingdom, but even that cannot keep them from falling in love.

The threat of war with the Speicans is a constant threat, and one that grows more frightening as she and Caelan train toward their eventual knighthood. Aislinn has committed herself to serving Arnhem, and has promised herself as King's Champion when Caelan claims the throne. She is willing to give up everything... her childhood, her life, even her heart for Arnhem. No matter the pain, it brings.

My Review: Woman of Honor by Nicole Zoltack is a beautiful sweet romance with a touch of fantasy. The author uses a lyrical cadence in her descriptions. At first, I wasn’t sure how much I would enjoy reading about a young girl, but to my delight, I did! Ms. Zoltack created a story that allowed me, the reader, to experience a different world through a seven year olds eye all the way through womanhood. The depiction of the surroundings, as well as the struggles Aislinn has in her travel to knighthood is well done. Tender moments sprinkled throughout kept the story warm and inviting. Aislinn is a heroine worthy of her ambitions. I was reluctant to stop reading for sleep because I wanted to know how the story progressed and if Aislinn succeeded. The supporting characters and accurate details gave a lovely view of life in medieval times. Ms. Zoltack took the time to build, layer by layer, a magnetic plot. Woman of Honor concludes nicely with the commitment of Aislinn and Caelan. The behind closed door intimacies seem very appropriate for this coming of age love story.
Ms. Zoltack did an excellent job giving a personality to Caelan through Aislinn’s eyes but as a reader, I want and expect a little of the hero’s point of view. What I missed was the thoughts and narrative of the hero, Caelan. Even with that said, I still found their journey to be wonderfully romantic.

With the exception of wanting a little more insight to the hero’s thoughts, I would recommend this book. Nicole Zoltack provides a well crafted story that focuses on emotion and anticipation. Not only a book that a young adult would enjoy, but a woman of any age who wants to enjoy romance and a strong heroine and how she gained her strength. In the future, we will see Nicole Zoltack ranking with many of the top authors we have come to love over the years. We will have a section of our bookcases or hard drives waiting for her newest release. I will certainly read the second installment in this series, Knight of Glory, due out in April 2010 because I enjoyed Ms. Zoltack’s writing and Woman of Honor that much.

A`La Wolf by Melody Knight

A`La Wolf by Melody Knight
Publisher: Red Rose Publishing
Genre: Paranormal

Summary:
Vixen is cool, interesting, in control. Too bad that Vixen is really Esther, a werewolf with aspirations to better things. In an attempt to spice up her life, she decides to visit The Fold, a nightclub with a dubious reputation. The place is notorious, as well as being the monthly starting point for The Hunt. When The Hunt goes wrong, Esther's rescuer is someone much closer to her heart than she ever suspected. What she's actually hunting for isn't Vixen, but Gregor, the wolf, and man, of her dreams.Gregor has loved Esther ever since he can remember. He doesn't even hold the fact she changed him into a werewolf against her. In fact, he perceives it as an advantage—nobody understands Esther the way he does. When Esther gets tired of playing it safe, and disappears to join in The Hunt, Gregor goes after her to stop her before she does something she will forever regret.

My Review: This was an interesting shape shifter book. It had all the makings of being a great read, but to this reviewer, I could not get enough from the story. The plot seemed to be too rushed and confusing. The overall concept of the plot is actually great, it was the way that it was written that hurt it.

The best part of the book was the characters. Ester and Gregor had a love-hate relationship. They are both trying to fit in and find themselves. Ester is a beautiful woman with a low self-esteem. She wants to be someone she isn’t, and she wants something that she already has-Gregor. Gregor knows that he wants Ester, and he is dedicated to her and being who she needs him to be. It was satisfying to watch Ester’s discovery of herself and Gregor.

Melody Knight is an amazing author, and I love her previous books. A`La Wolf is not up to the standard that Melody Knight has set in her previous books. Sadly, I am going to give this book 3 Delightful Divas.

The Goblin King by Belita Renn

The Goblin King by Belita Renn
Publisher: Red Rose Publishing
Genre: Erotic Romance
/BDSM

Summary: Will curiosity kill the cat or will she be purring in ecstasy?
From a small village where she did all the work and everyone else was lazy, and her world is dull wood buildings and dirt streets.

When Alex wakes in a world of Goblins where everyone is busy, she is excited and eager to explore. Everyone is in fact goblins of all shapes and sizes as only King Crick is human in form. Everything is colorful and beautiful, even the kings skin changes colors.

The Goblin King is busy ruling his kingdom, but he has summoned her to his world to be his Queen. He will gladly take time to rule and love her.

Is He the Dom she has been longing for?

Plus does he have a few tricks to keep her thoroughly satisfied?

My Review: Well, I’m not sure what to think, to be honest. I’ve read previous work by Belita Renn and enjoyed it. She has a distinct ability to keep BDSM romantic. However, The Goblin King came up short. The sex in the book was up to Ms. Renn’s standards, but the story seemed more like a fairy tale with some soft BDSM thrown in for the last few pages to make it an erotic romance. It came across as an unnecessary sex scene. Remove any sexual content and it would be a wonderful children’s story.

I like fantasy and creatures and Belita Renn gave them great descriptions and personalities. Their unique bodies and personalities came to life for me with her artful creativity. The Goblin King had solid writing and the fantasy world layered nicely. The problem was, when I’m expecting an erotic romance with BDSM, that’s what I want to read. It lacked the connection between King Crick and Alex. Alex is a well written heroine, but her relationship really only centered on the Goblins. I also found her a bit unlikable when she had no sympathy for the penalty the Goblins suffered at her refusal to meet the King.

A short read can be difficult to build depth, but at minimum, a romance story should contain a bigger portion of romance than this one had. A build of anticipation or interaction between the heroine and hero is more enticing. I will read Belita Renn again because she is a quality writer, but I’ll hope that I am rewarded with an engaging relationship of the main characters and incredible sex scenes that I’ve come to expect from Belita Renn. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t recommend The Goblin King but would continue to recommend Ms. Renn as an author to look for.

Out of Time by Clare London

Out of Time by Clare London
Publisher: Love You Divine
Genre: M/M Fantasy

Summary:
Ambrus travels in space and time, a mature and confident vampire, not looking for any permanent companion. Then in the bloody trenches of WWI, he meets Edward, a beautiful young soldier turned vampire against his will and fighting his fate with bitter anger and resentment. Ambrus is irresistibly drawn to him but Edward rejects him at first. What then follows is a strange, anguished courtship throughout the century, as Ambrus seeks to help Edward find his own way to peace as an immortal, and Edward learns what real love - and a real lover – is.

My Review: This may come as a shocker, but I have never read male/male erotica stories. So, when Clare gave me the chance to read her story and review it, I jumped excitedly at the opportunity.

In a word this book is HAWT, eye opening and very tender.

When we first meet Ambrus, he is walking through the battlefields of WWI and he stumbles upon Edward, a newly born vampire trying to sustain himself. His body reacts to this young man in two ways; one is very sensual but the other is very protective, his need to teach Edward how to slip through time effortlessly and effectively. The other is his need to hold Edward, tell him that everything will be alright, but when he meets his eyes, he can tell that poor Edward is hurt and angry and not ready to try out his new life, his rebirth.

Each time they meet it is a new era in time, and each time Edward grows closer to Ambrus, but he still holds back. He refuses to believe what he has become, refuses to let go of his human friends and in the end, it is his compassion for humans that draws Ambrus closer to him.
But is it enough?

Even though the story was short, every emotion, every scene Ms. London portrayed was delicately placed before you. As I read her story I felt for each of the men, and I wondered, will they ever give in to their feelings of true love, or will they be destined to roam the earth by themselves, only crossing paths every twenty to thirty years.

In the end I screamed in Triumph as everything Ambrus fought so hard for came to pass and I could feel his heart lighten in total exhilaration. This story is a quick read, not because of the length, but because you will be turning the pages just find out of if Ambrus is really, Out of Time.

Kidnapped by Rita Karnopp

Kidnapped by Rita Karnopp
Publisher: Eternal Press
Genre: Romantic Suspense

Summary: Laura and Aaron Palmer's marriage is over, but they've got newly adopted daughter Amie to consider. If they split up now, young Amie could be taken away from them both forever. Life is complicated, but it takes a turn for the worse when Laura finds Amie's picture listed in an ad for missing and abducted children. But are the people who claim to be Amie's biological parents really what they seem, or is something more sinister at play? Alienated emotionally from each other, and paralyzed with fear, can Laura and Aaron find a way to save their marriage and protect their adopted daughter?

My Review: There are a few twists and turns in this tale of manipulation, secrecy, and ultimately, love. I am not a usual fan of this genre, but I found the plot engaging and the characters (although I was not sold on Aaron at first) equally interesting. Ms. Karnopp did an excellent job of making her characters feel real (and by real I mean flaws and all).

Internet Bonds Book 7: Black Lace by Christy Poff

Internet Bonds Book 7: Black Lace by Christy Poff
Publisher: Whiskey Creek Press
Genre: Erotic/BDSM

Summary: Chelsea Strawbridge lives on the outside of “proper society” and doesn’t care. She’s happy with her life—in every way.Reed Carrington hides his true identity in order to do what he truly loves—fight fire. When he meets Chelsea, his life seems complete, save for one thing. One mistake with the wrong woman and Reed finds he and Chelsea paying for someone else’s insane obsession. Can the heat of his lady in black lace be enough to keep them alive or will their world fall in on them in more ways than one?

My Review: This is a well constructed, researched and written romance story, but I feel it necessary to warn any BDSM enthusiasts away from the “strange and vanilla orientated language” in this book. Basically there is no D/s relationship here as the main characters exchange salutations of Mistress and Master to themselves, but no real power exchange occurs at any time. Although it is a fascinating plot, the author has reached into a area she lacks expertise in, and has put together lines she thinks BDSM lifestyle enthusiasts use, making this an excellent example of a book designed to use the current popularity of BDSM to interest readers.

That said, the plot and characters are excellent, if a little over busy, except for a stretch with the Jocilynne Sommersby character who is the evil “other woman”. Now she gets away with things nearly impossible to believe, like beating the heroine to a pulp, and the author seems to want us to believe it’s because her family is rich and powerful. Update to author; in this day and age the rich and powerful are under constant media scrutiny, so in a very real way the tables have turned on them somewhat. The author also spends a lot of time character-building Jocilynne so we believe she’s evil, hard-boiled, and close to crazy, but then, near the end, this maniac stalker can’t tell her mother not to send an invitation to a society party to the heroine, whom she hates. The older woman chides her daughter with, “Don’t forget your manners, dear.” It seems unrealistic of the character she has presented, to say the very least.

Rating: I was put off seriously by the “BDSM” scenes in this book, but they are just the thing for vanilla folk who want to read something risqué. Despite the stretch of the antagonist character, she is still a love to hate wonder with a touch of insanity. I’m going to give Internet Bonds Book 7: Black Lace three and one half Delightful Divas.

The Pleasure Cruise by Raven Starr

The Pleasure Cruise by Raven Starr
Publisher: Red Rose Publishing
Genre: IR/Contemporary

Summary: After returning home, Raine Matthews' fantasy writer extraordinaire decides to take a short vacation from her woes and flies off to Miami for her cruise. What she thought was going to a quiet, relaxing trip ended up transforming the wall-flower in to a sex-craving machine.

Will all it be is sex or is there more to it than that?

My Review: We first meet Raine when she is about to board a cruise ship headed toward Mexico, she needs some time away to gather herself and this is her one chance to do so.As she makes her way through the ship, she encounters a beautiful Latin man and it is instant lust. She loves his body, the way smells and talks, but she doesn’t want to seem too eager.Miguel, in all his dapper goodness, comes up to her and expels all of the most over used words you could imagine, but coming from him, it sounds like pure butter and Raine finds herself unwilling to tell him to get lost. So, when she puts her hand in his, she knows she will be lost to his charm, sexuality and body, forever.

I have to say I liked the book, but at the same time I have to say I thought I was watching a thirty minute soft porn movie on Cinemax. All the lines were there for Cinemax after dark, the hot guy, the beautiful girl, but somewhere in the mix of it all, we see Raine let loose and be free. She says she has never felt like this before, and I believe it to be true. Yes, Latin lover Miguel is all over her, but he still takes care of her, fulfills her needs, and by the time the cruise is done, we see he really, really wants her to stay.

So if you want that Cinemax feel with an edge and maybe some cheesy porn music thrown in, then this is the story for you. But if you want raunchy to the max, pick something else. Yes, you get the sex and everything that goes with it, but you also get a good story with a nice plot.

Finding a Heart of Snow by Ian Sentelik

Finding a Heart of Snow by Ian Sentelik
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Genre: Erotic Fantasy, GLBT, M/M

Summary: Long ago, the great Snow Queen died of a broken heart, sending her magical world of dancing snowflakes and glittering icicles into a deep depression. Fearful of the same fate, her subjects sealed their hearts into an icy crystal for safekeeping, hoping to protect themselves and their future. For centuries, the communal Snowheart keeps the snow spirits of the north safe from their emotions, until a mischievous luck spirit steals the mystical crystal, intending to melt it down and extract its magical power at the cost of the snow spirits' lives. Marmion Roy never dreams of such a frosted, wondrous world until a snow spirit invades his reality, his home, and his heart. Shirai demands his help to recover the Snowheart and annihilate the thieving luck spirit. Because Shirai is void of softer emotion, Mar believes that love with a brusque and literally heartless spirit would be impossible — at least until Shirai accidentally is reunited with his own personal part of the Snowheart.

My Review: Have you ever had “one of those days”? Nothing has gone right for Mar today, and it all started when he woke up to a broken window, and ended with dropped groceries and stolen textbooks when he got home.

Oh, wait. No it didn’t. When he finally makes it home and into his apartment, he’s attacked by a man “with a voice as cold as the icy hand pressed like a tiger’s paw against his throat”. And so his adventure begins. Will he pass out? Why is the hand so icy? When will his luck improve? Why do they end up at his ex-girlfriends house? And what happens to his heart when Shirai finishes his mission? Can a mortal and a snow spirit have a happy ever after?

I laughed, cheered and cringed, got confused and cried. This may be a fantasy story but the characters were still real enough to suck me into the story. Finding a Heart of Snow was not edge-of-your-seat intense but more steady paced with bursts of intense. I’d like to read what happens next. Just to let you know, this is more sensuality than thrusting sex.

Finding a Heart of Snow was a delightful read. Ian Sentelik is currently at university studying Creative Writing. If this is how well he writes now, he’s going on my “watch for” list.

Pink Champagne and Apple Juice by Anne Brooke

Pink Champagne and Apple Juice by Anne Brooke
Publisher: Bristlecone Pine Press
Genre: Comedy/Romance GLBT

Summary: Angie Howard has one ambition - to escape from her home in the idyllic Essex countryside and set up her own café in London. Once there, she seeks out her long-lost Uncle John, whose lifestyle is not at all what she expected.

Before she can achieve her goal, she has to juggle the needs of a glamorous French waiter, a grouchy German chef and her exuberant, transvestite uncle. All of it in the exotic melting pot of Uncle John’s gay nightclub, The Den.

What's more, if she manages to keep the lid on all that, what will she do about the other hidden secrets of her family?

My Review: As I started reading this with my good ol’ cuppa joe on a lovely Saturday morning, Pink Champagne and Apple Juice was probably the first ebook that had me chuckling every two minutes. Anne Brooke must be a comedian at heart because right from the start you have the main girl, Angie Howard running from her own mother to get on the train to find her Uncle John. Trouble and mishaps followed her nonstop. Angie wanted to have her own life and not have a sheltered life with her overprotective mother. Angie’s character is so easy to like and anyone can relate to her because all she wants is to have her freedom and live life to the fullest. She really does when she finally arrived at her Uncle John’s home, which is rather a racy nightclub with cross dressers and gay people to relax and be themselves. As fun as it was for Angie to partake in Uncle John’s The Den, every vibrant character worked against her. She had to go through challenges and learn about her own flaws, as well as the family tension between her mother and her uncle. The ugly truth later rears its ugly head, but the endless twists kept me wondering how the story will end.

This lively story was amazing in descriptions and situations, so it was very easy to play the story in my head like a movie. It fondly reminded me of the movie called The Birdcage, and the transvestite uncle John was very much like the one and only Nathan Lane, but was set in England and raunchier innuendo. The French waiter gave Angie the time of her life, while the yelling German chef constantly fought with her due to his passion of cooking. Never diss the mushroom ice cream! Her uncle John was constantly the proverbial keeper of secrets and seemed to hide behind his cross dressing personality, Jolene. John/Jolene often caused trouble for Angie and the twists he caused kept me on my toes. This story had other twists, so much that I got caught up in all of them and was wowed by the final twist. It floored me and I kept saying ‘wow!’ when I finished.

Anne Brooke truly mastered the art of keeping her readers drawn in and distracted so the ending isn’t predictable and boring. Her imagination was totally endless and hilarious. The only drawback in this story was some of the British words. It took me a moment to figure out what she meant, but the general idea was caught on. It was easy to follow for the most part.

Overall, Pink Champagne and Apple Juice was a great, laid back story with many twists to keep you laughing. The fast paced flow of the wacky story was undeniably fun. I say that if on a rainy day or just when you need to laugh in a ‘The Birdcage’ feel, this book is for you. I recommend for anyone to read this book, and also the mushroom ice cream done by the German chef. He was a riot!
