Kathy’s Review: Blood Noir by Jesse Fox, completely surpassed any and all expectations that I had for this book. I’m still, the day after, amazed at the complexity and the total thrill-ride that I found. Extremely intense, gripping, enthralling… these are such poor words to convey my total impression of the book. This is NOT a story for anyone that finds violence unsettling, but for those that enjoy eerie suspense stories tied with a stellar romance, I highly recommend Blood Noir.
Now, on to my impressions of the characters and story. The title Blood Noir. is, to my mind, wonderfully apt and indicative of what the reader can expect. There’s a dark undertone to the book and a mystery that intrigues all the way through. There are some rather disturbing past events alluded to, but they’re by no means gratuitous. Without the detail and recounting, the story would be woefully inadequate. This is the first book by Jesse Fox that I’ve read; what an introduction to the author’s compelling build-up of suspense and mystery. There are so many parts of the story that are extremely clear in my mind, still. Blood Noir is definitely a taut thriller, with a touching and heart-warming romance.
The characters… wow, where to start without giving anything away? Harley and Alex are a fantastic couple who’ve been together for 10 years. And yet, like any couple, each has their own secrets. And while very often secrets aren’t a major problem in a loving relationship, these secrets are deadly. Both men are trying to protect the other and, in the end, are protecting no one; a lesson to be learned, for sure.

Harley’s past before Alex is pretty much a mystery. We’re treated to bits and pieces throughout the story, but there is something in his past that has led him, or at least exacerbated his need, to be over-protective of those he loves. And Alex is right there, front and center as not only the love of Harley’s life, but someone that he wants to protect with all that he is and has.
Alex; I loved him… well, I loved Harley too, but in a different way. And, like Harley, I wanted to protect Alex and keep him safe. But life doesn’t allow us to protect those we love the way we’d like to, at least not without crushing a good part of their spirit. Unfortunately, the hardest lessons learned are the ones that help us to grow the most. But as the story progresses we discover that Alex has a lot more under the surface than even he knew.
The secondary characters are a varied lot and, for some of them, it took to the end of the book before I didn’t want to smack them. Jesse Fox’s characterizations were all extremely well done and the story was incredible. Not a book to put down and I got so very caught up in all that was happening: cringing, crying, yelling, and sometimes almost in shock. Fabulous, Fabulous story… so don’t wait. Do yourself a favour and find out just how supremely excellent Jesse Fox and Blood Noir are.
