Donna’s Review:
Like a Sacred Desire: Tales of Sex Magick by Various Authors is exactly what the title promises; a unique and intriguing collection of short stories sharing the theme of sex magick. The word magick is spelled with a ‘k’ to differentiate from the common association notion of magic, as in stage magic. Magick in these stories is associated with spirituality, with gods and goddesses, spirits and powers, shaman and priests, centered on sexual events.
The Hand You’re Dealt by Elizabeth Schechter is my favorite story in this collection. Nickolai’s deep love for Steven and his acceptance and sensitivity to Steven’s blindness was touching, and the use of the Tarot to determine sexual action in a BDSM setting was intriguing. While this story is complete as written, I would love to read more about these characters.

I found Unquiet Ghosts by Jana Denardo fascinating. The story builds on layer upon layer of pain and guilt. When true redemption, rather than punishment labeled as redemption, is offered, it is just as much the main character’s inability to forgive himself that slows the healing process as the memories of the terrible things that have been done to him. It was an interesting look at the idea that it isn’t enough to ask for healing, one has to be ready to receive it.
The remaining stories, Perhaps a Worthy Offering, Opening, The Birthright, Wood, and St. Nickolas’ Eve, are also thought provoking, sensual stories. None are easy reads, but they weren’t meant to be. Each story is a unique expression of sex as a sacred event.
I could easily see this collection being used in a discussion group on mythology and sexology. Joseph Campbell would have had much to say about the characters and situations found here. It is a superb collection of authors and their stories.
