In Wicked Hearts, Hank Seeley, Reese’s controlling ex-lover, did his best to come between Reese and Jeff. Still bitter over Reese’s desertion, Hank continues to use anger and sex to cover the shards of his broken heart. Not even bothering to pick up guys at bars, Hank orders in, calling for young rent boys to service him until he grows tired of them. When Russell Evans, a big bear of a man, shows up one night instead of the ordered twink, Hank ends up getting more than he bargained for.
Russell is a sex worker with issues of his own. He’s also a Dom with lots of heart, who sees a glimmer of the real man trapped beneath the cold façade Hank presents to the world. Russell is used to comforting the lonely men who seek out his services, but he doesn’t count on his own powerful reaction to the handsome, difficult Hank Seeley.
On this tough road to redemption, Hank will fall hard before he can hope to rise. The erotic exploration of dominance and submission is enough to draw the two men into a passionate connection, but in the end, it may not be enough. Unless Hank can face his own demons, he will lose the one thing worth fighting for—love.
K.B.'s Review:
Claire Thompson far exceeded my high expectations of Safe in His Arms. I had complete faith in Ms. Thompson’s abilities to redeem Hank Seely, but, once again, my imagination failed me, and in this case, that is a good thing!
Hank Seely is pretty close to rock bottom when Safe in His Arms opens. He has lost his only friend, Reese, and he is reduced to paying for sex with rent boys. I could not stop laughing when Hank opened his door to discover Russell Evans instead of his usual twenty something twink. Hank attempts to control Russell with his usual high-handed commanding tactics, but he quickly finds that Russell will be calling the shots. From their very first meeting, Hank’s transformation begins. It is nothing dramatic, but he realizes that a relationship with Russell will only occur on Russell’s terms.
Russell Evans is, without a doubt, the perfect person to induce Hank’s transformation from an utter ass to a respectable human. He may be a sex worker, but Russell has self-respect, and he won’t put up with Hank’s shenanigans, period. One of the most important lessons Hank learns from Russell is everyone deserves to be treated with respect. Russell has a solid work ethic, and he is working three jobs so he can buy a partnership in a beer microbrewery. For the first time in his life, Hank sees someone working hard for what he wants instead of having it handed to him. And Russell is not impressed with Hank’s wealth.
Ms. Thompson metamorphosis of Hank does not happen overnight or easily. In the beginning, Hank is paying lip service to what he thinks Russell wants to see and hear. But when Hank finally does hit rock bottom, he has to dig deep down inside himself and begin to make real and lasting changes to his life. Only then can he hope to have a future with Russell.

Ms. Thompson has an amazing insight into human nature that is reflected in her novels. Her multi-faceted characters have their share of flaws that readers are able to relate to, and in some cases, overlook. I found that to be the case with Hank. Even when he was at his worst, I found myself drawn to him because I could see the pain he was trying to conceal. There are two very poignant scenes in Safe in His Arms that reveal a great deal of insight into Hank’s character.
Safe in His Arms is more than a novel about Hank’s redemption. It teaches an important lesson in looking beyond the actions of an individual to the real person underneath.
You are going to laugh. You may shed a few tears. You will cheer when Hank and Russell find love. You are going to be amazed when Hank discovers the man he is meant to be. You will not regret reading Safe in His Arms by Claire Thompson.
