Freeman by Clare London

Freeman by Clare London
Publisher: MLR Press
Genre: erotic, M/M romance

Review Copy received from Author

Summary:
Freeman’s return to the city is quiet, without fuss — the way he likes things. But, he’s missed by more people than he thought: his ex-wife, his ex-lover, and his ex-business partner. One wants friendship, another one intimacy. The third just wants him the hell gone again.
Freeman — private, controlled — hasn’t time or appetite for trouble. But, when he strikes up an unusual, ill-advised friendship with young, lively, amoral Kit, it seems trouble’s come looking for both men, ready to expose secrets that can destroy the fragile trust they’ve built. Freeman’s more ready for the challenge than anyone realizes when the choice comes down to peace or Kit’s life.

Jaime’s Review:
This was an interesting read. There were times in this book when I thought...man. One of these characters is just too stupid for words. What an uncomplimentary thing to say, you might think. It simply speaks to the number of layers Ms. London wove into this tale, that, hard as I looked, I couldn't always see through to what was really going on. I could guess, sure, but I didn't always get it right. That's just good writing. I've heard Ms. London say in interviews that this isn't typical of her usual m/m fare. She's right. I'm very familiar with her work. This book is definitely a departure, and a welcome one.

Freeman is as hard for readers to get to know as he is for his fellow characters. Even the ones who thought they knew him discover some things about him that they really weren't expecting. He's a strong, stoic type to the nth degree, and normally, I don't go in for that kind of character. I like to see the connection between the men as they fall for one another. Freeman doesn't give anything away, not even to Kit, who desperately needs to know what's going through the older man's head.

Kit, described as amoral, strikes me more as lost. His past is just a mystery until almost the very end of the story. It's not a unique past. It happens all the time, and it's a little frightening to realize how far, and how fast, a person can get lost in a world where he doesn't even know he doesn't belong until it's too late. Kit's saving grace isn't even Freeman. It's his own strength that he almost doesn't think he has that keeps his head above water just long enough for Freeman to grab on.

There's an interesting dynamic between the two. Where you might think Freeman is the man in control, because that's what he needs to be, he's not, so much, when it comes to Kit. He can't control the boy, and he can't control how he feels for the boy. Kit, on the other hand, wants some sort of structure from Freeman that Freeman won't give him. It's fascinating. Ms. London has played with the dynamics of this couple so thoroughly, it impossible to tell which end is up, and by the time push comes to shove, there's only one answer, and it isn't what anyone, even the reader really expects.

The plot to this story is shrouded in so many secrets and memories no one wants to get into, that every twist is both anticipated and at the same time, a little more twisted than I expected. It certainly kept me interested beyond the convoluted romance. Most of the time, the strength in a book lies either in the plot, or the romance. This time, there's equal screen time, equal emphasis given to both, and the book is great for that reason. I'd be hard pressed to slot this story into a genre, but I'm quick to say, it was one thoroughly enjoyable read.
My recommendation: This book is for anyone with a bent for puzzle solving, and anyone who likes the power dynamics in a relationship to go beyond the expected.

Hot and Sticky by Keta Diablo

Summary:
It's been extremely difficult for Hugh Landon, an up and coming lawyer in Washington, D.C., to control his sexual fantasies about his paralegal, Milan Vassar.

When his career hangs in the balance over a missing file, Hugh must call Milan at the midnight hour and plead for assistance.

Hugh's determination not to mix business with pleasure disintegrates when Milan arrives at the office not only to help him, but to confess he's held the same secret desires for his boss.

Stacey’s Review:
Wow! This was my first book by Keta Diablo and certainly will not be my last. She’s stolen my M/M virginity and I couldn’t be happier it happened with Hot and Sticky.

My expectations for character development were not high since this short is only 10,000 words long. Do not be deceived by the length! Hugh and Milan were brilliantly developed. The blend of narration, dialogue and action flowed smoothly. Keta Diablo made her characters come to life for me.

Hugh is flawed and balances many responsibilities in his career. His intense attraction to his paralegal doesn’t help. When he discovers that Milan feels the same way about him, sparks fly. The sex scenes were smokin’ hot!

I want more from Keta Diablo. Her writing voice is unique and captivating. She allowed me to become a part of her characters’ lives. I journeyed with them through their initial attraction, budding relationship, and savored the satisfying conclusion. If you are a faithful M/M romance reader, or curious to indulge for the first time, you must pick up Hot and Sticky the moment it’s released. Loved it!

When a pregnant Chloe shows up looking for Michael, he's stunned to find out that he's going to be a father. It appears that fate is determined to put the woman in his path. But is Michael willing to fight for Chloe when another werewolf decides to claim her?

Monica’s Review:
I have started to grow a fondness for Jessica Coulter Smith with Moonlight Guardian. She really took a step away from the magic filled werewolf story to the more romantic and real romance of the characters. I have to admit I was taken aback a few times throughout the story, it was not easily predictable. What I do predict is that I am going to make "Team Ramsey" and "Team Michael" T-shirts to see who loved whom in this story.

There is so much tension between all the characters it's easily, even though the story is over, a toss up. The characters in this story held my attention through the whole book. I was pleasantly surprised on how much I loved both of the men in Chloe's life. I did not, however, feel very comfortable with the sensual scenes between the guy and this pregnant woman. The scenes made me slightly uncomfortable while I was reading them, I know that pregnant women can be very sensual but I just had a hard time relating the character in that moment, not my thing.

The writing of this author has gotten better and better with each new book she writes. I love the Ashton Grove weres and can't wait to read a ton more about them!

Lad has always feared fire. Secrets surround the fateful night assassins used it as a weapon to rob him of his parents and his true name. The scars left on his body and soul forced Lad into a lonely existence. He roams the countryside as a sword for hire, never feeling safe, never settling down. While on a mission, Lad meets Jai, a dark and mysterious warrior with his own secrets. Jai ignites a very different fire in Lad and the young man knows a new type of fear. Will Lad allow himself to succumb?

Excerpt:

The blade glistens, reflecting red-gold from the fire light as it cleaves flesh and bone. He is always victorious, defeating his enemies with ease, earning the gratitude of those he served. He has saved lives and protected people's belongings, yet somehow, it holds no meaning anymore.

* * * * *

Lad entered the temple, pushing past a group of mercenaries on their way out. Despite the fact that they were within a holy place, they were drunk, but that never mattered to them. Sometimes they came for the same reason he did—to find work and to pursue those who committed crimes against the temple's followers. The priests never turned them away. At least Lad tried to show some respect, although he had a feeling if the priests knew all his secrets, they would look at him with scorn.

His steps led him down the sparsely decorated halls, past robed acolytes and statues depicting the images of the various gods worshipped. At the very rear of the temple were the offices where the priests conducted their business, ranging from acts of charity to ministering to the sick.

He stepped before an open door and saw the old priest seated behind his desk, busily scribbling on paper with a pen. Lad knocked on the doorframe. "Hello, Father Dralin."

He looked up with a smile. "Well, if it isn't Lad. I trust your mission was successful?"

"Yes. The murderer is dead."

The priest sighed and nodded in resignation. "I'm not surprised you were forced to kill him. Very well, if you have the necessary paperwork, we'll close this case, and I'll see to your payment."

"Yes, sir." Lad removed the backpack he wore and reached within, presenting the sheath of documents to the old priest.

Dralin returned to his desk. "So where will you go now?"

"South," Lad said. "Winter is coming on, and I have several jobs."

"Lad, I've been meaning to ask you." The priest seemed to be choosing his words carefully. "Why not stay here and join the ranks of our protectors?"

Lad moistened his lips. It was not the first time he'd received such an offer. "No, thank you."

"Won't you even consider it? You've been wandering the countryside for so long, haven't you? You need a home, a place to settle down, raise a family."

"No, thank you," Lad said again, placing a small amount of force in his voice. He'd had a home, and he'd lost it.
Father Dralin released a breath. "Very well." He handed Lad a burlap envelope within which he knew was his payment—a combination of paper script and gold since the new paper currency wasn't yet accepted in all the provinces. "If you change your mind…"

Lad managed a smile but knew it probably resembled more of a grimace. "I'll see you next spring."

"I'll look for you," Dralin said. "And look out for yourself."

As always.

* * * * *

He was called Lad, although that wasn't his real name. He didn't know his real name. He was certain he had one. He just didn't remember it. The man who saved his life, who cared for him until his death always called him lad.

"Now, lad, I'm going to show you how to use a sword."

"Come along, lad, we have work to do."

"This is what we do for a living, lad. We find criminals and bring `em in."

He supposed the old hunter could have given him a name, but he'd never bothered, and Lad didn't find any name that he felt suited him.

The hunter was called Noth, or at least that's what the villagers called him. Lad had lived with Noth until he was seventeen summers and then…

Lad strode down the dirt road towards the ramshackle hut he shared with Noth. He'd been away longer than he intended. When he returned to the village, the people went out of their way to avoid him, never quite looking into his eyes or hurrying through their business transactions with him. He was worried now, since no one asked how he was doing or if he'd been home to see Noth. Lad lengthened his stride until he was running. The air was filled with the scent of old smoke and the loam of the earth.

As he rounded the bend, he saw it.

His home was gone. All that remained was a few blackened timbers, the structure ravaged by fire.
Lad fell to his knees as he hugged his arms to his chest. His stomach churned as his chest shuddered with dry sobs. Fire. Lad feared fire. No, it was more than fear – he was terrified of it. To him, fire was death—a monster with glowing eyes that roared terribly and drowned out his own screaming voice.

Lad shook his head as he walked, hoping to banish the memories. Of course, they never left him.
He'd searched through the charred remains of his home hoping that Noth was out somewhere, perhaps injured, but even as he searched he knew. The villagers had told him without words that the only father he had ever known was dead.

Lad left the village that same night. Until then, he thought of it as home. Now, he had no home. For five years he'd wandered the lands, taking jobs as he could. To him, home was a myth. Something others had that he obviously didn't deserve.

* * * * *

The pretty serving girl set down the plate and the cup of wine. Her smile was inviting, but it only made Lad sigh inwardly. He tired of having to explain himself to women. He'd taken a long time to come to terms with his sexual preferences. Noth had told him what he knew about men loving men, and Lad supposed it was enough.
But Noth had warned him, "Ya probably don't want ta go gossipin' about the fact that ya like men. Some people don't take too kindly to it."

Lad took a sip of the beer before digging into the succulent roast beef and potatoes. The inn was one he frequented when he was in this town and knew he was in for a lengthy stay. He'd been hired by the town officials to find a thief who had stolen some rare artifacts of the local temple, and to find and return said artifacts. Lad doubted the thief was still in the area, but he'd been told where the thief might be hiding.

There were ruins outside of the city, remnants of a long forgotten ancient civilization. The place was supposed to be cursed, but Lad seldom paid attention to such rumors. He was familiar with magic and had dealt with magic workers in the past who told him that such "curses" usually dissipated over time or with the death of the caster. Curses were also usually tailored to either one person or a family and descendants, and despite popular belief, had no power over a random stranger.

Tomorrow Lad planned to travel to the ruins, see what he could find, and go from there. He didn't go out at night if he could avoid it because it would necessitate lighting a fire. Even on the coldest and darkest nights, Lad was incapable of bringing fire to life. When he was forced to travel at night, he usually paid for a mage torch—light captured in a glass globe and set atop a staff.

With that settled, Lad went about enjoying his meal…until he had the unmistakable sense of eyes on him.
He raised his head, his gaze traveling across the room. He examined each patron for a brief moment to determine who might prove to be a threat. In a short time, he found the source of his discomfort.

The man sat at the far corner of the room near the massive fireplace. Lad immediately envied the fellow's ability to be so near fire. He wasn't entirely handsome, for his face possessed many angular lines and an aquiline nose. His hair had the appearance of being hacked off with a knife, much like Lad's, except it was dark, almost black. His eyes were dark as well. Fathomless, as Lad had heard such a color described in romantic ballads. Lad thought such tales were ridiculous.

He made no attempt to hide his scrutiny. The dark-haired man raised a cup to his lips and continued to regard Lad over the rim. There was a sense of familiarity about him that made Lad squirm in his chair. Confrontations were common in his line of work, and it wasn't a stretch that this was an old vendetta coming back to haunt him.

The man's lips lifted in a slight smile, and the simple action sent a ripple of awareness through Lad that he hadn't experienced in quite a few years. It was uncanny. Lad furrowed his brow and narrowed his eyes, sending a clear warning. The man continued to look, obviously enjoying what he saw.

There was a connection between him and this stranger, an arc of fire linking them and filling Lad with heat. The man nodded slightly, his eyes filled, it seemed, with knowledge of what was in Lad's heart. Moreover, if Lad didn't know it was impossible, he would have sworn that he heard a whisper in the back of his mind.

Dark Secrets by Jan Bowles

Dark Secrets by Jan Bowles
Publisher: Siren-Bookstrand Publishing
Genre: erotic, suspense, contemporary romance

Review Copy received from Publisher

Summary:
Thirty-two year old English Architect Sam Marshall had vowed never to return to Oxley in Oxfordshire. When he meets Megan Lawrence, a twenty-five year old ethereal beauty for the first time in ten years, old wounds are re-opened.
Their troubled past has remained unspoken all this time. Neither of them wants to broach the subject, yet they both know the deep attraction between them will not go away.
Are they really willing to lay their emotions bare in order to move on? Can they finally put the past behind them once and for all? Will Sam eventually find it in his heart to forgive Megan? And will Megan ever learn to forgive herself?

Stacey’s Review:
Megan has a troubled past that nobody knows about but herself. The dark secret she carries manifests itself in her life in destructive ways, but letting go of the painful memories are too difficult.
When Sam comes back into her life, she knows she still loves him. Will the past make a relationship impossible?

Jan Bowles created a decadent tale of love, secrets and forgiveness. The sexual tension between Megan and Sam was done to perfection and kept this reviewer anxiously awaiting the day they’d finally give in to their passion.

The story was suspenseful and intriguing, leaving the reader begging for answers and closure. The sex scenes were hot, but never felt forced or rushed. Jan Bowles is truly gifted at fleshing out real, believable characters that touch your heart. I’m still left thinking about the emotionally driven plot and satisfying conclusion.

Dark Secrets by Jan Bowles was an enjoyable read that held my interest. The love story is one I will remember. I look forward to more novels by this talented author and recommend romance lovers that enjoy depth to their stories to purchase, Dark Secrets.

A Trick Of The Senses (Sensational Story, #4) by Anah Crow and Dianne Fox

A Trick Of The Senses (Sensational Story, #4) by Anah Crow and Dianne Fox
Publisher: Torquere Press
Genre: erotic, urban fantasy, M/M romance

Review Copy received from Publisher

Summary:
Jasper is a reluctant psychic with difficult powers and Samson is his service dog in canine form and his best friend when human. At a very strange time of year, Jasper's powers are troubling him more than ever. He's determined to face down the danger, but Samson will do anything possible to keep him safe. Can they find a way to survive the season? Jasper and Samson of the "Sensational" series first appeared in the K-9 Taste Test by Torquere Press.

Kris’ Review:
This is the last story in the ‘Sensational’ series by Anah Crow and Dianne Fox. This fourth sequel should definitely be read as a 'slice of life' short story as we're thrust into Jasper and Samson's now established relationship. It is great to meet Jasper and Samson again and witness how they've evolved. Jasper seems to be growing stronger by the day thanks to Samson's support, and he's confident when they're having sex, which is delightful.

The sex itself, however, is not as earth shattering as I thought it might be between those two special characters. Maybe it is because the really special time was in the short story number three that I missed? In any case, it definitely doesn't make it less enjoyable to finally see those two getting comfortable with each other's bodies.
A minor complaint I had was that Jasper called Samson both 'Samson' and 'Sam'. This wasn't in the first two stories, and I found it a little jarring because it doesn't just happen in dialogue but during the narration as well.

The selling point of A Trick of the Senses, though, is the wonderful way in which Jasper finally decides to take on some measure of responsibility when it comes to his powers. They're still nebulous and remain unexplained throughout the whole series, but in this opus we witness him coming into his own. Instead of running away from his visions he takes charge, against Samson's approval, and it makes him grow and succeed. Even though I missed out on short story number three, the delicate and slow way with which Ms. Crow and Ms. Fox have approached and treated the subject of Jasper and his powers makes it all the more satisfying to read about a true achievement of his.

A Trick of the Senses is a great addition to the saga of Jasper and Samson and will leave you (as it always seems with this wonderful writing duo) wanting more—even as you're relatively sated to know that the pair have finally reached some sort of light at the end of the tunnel with regards to Jasper's difficulties with his still-unexplained powers.

A Sense Of Trust (Sensational Story, #2) by Anah Crow and Dianne Fox

A Sense Of Trust (Sensational Story, #2) by Anah Crow and Dianne Fox
Publisher: Torquere Press
Genre: M/M, contemporary, paranormal

Review Copy received from Publisher

Summary:
Valentine's Day is a cruel day for the lonely, but this year it's the first day of the rest of Jasper's life. Jasper can see into the future and, until he found Samson, it drove him mad. Together, they can live a normal life, with Samson as Jasper's service dog and best friend. Yet, starting over is almost more than Jasper can bear. He clings to the safety of his old drugs and routines, trying to make the day perfect, but to no avail. Only Samson can make things right for Jasper, if Jasper can learn to trust him. A Sense of Trust is the sequel to Nice: Coming to His Senses.

Kris’ Review:
In this sequel to Nice: Coming to His Senses by Anah Crow and Dianne Fox, we meet Jasper and Samson again on their first day of moving in and starting to live together. It’s Jasper’s first time outside of any type of institution and Samson’s role is to provide some sort of fodder between Jasper and reality, and to help Jasper with his dreams.

Without having read the previous story, coming to terms with what is going on is quite difficult for the reader. Some time has elapsed between the end of Nice and the beginning of this story and it’s not clear what has happened—this short story feels slightly more disjointed than the first one. The other thing that struck me as odd was the significance of Valentine’s Day: its inclusion seemed a bit artificial and the story could have very well stood without it. Ms Crow and Ms. Fox, however, excel at giving us a taste of what life for both Jasper and Samson will be, and that definitely makes up for the reader being confused or a bit out of sorts at the beginning.

It was wonderful to revisit Samson and Jasper as the open ending of the first story leaves the reader wanting more. The way Jasper copes with being free of his movements is fascinating, as is the outlook of Samson on being able to shapeshift.
There is the beginning of burgeoning desire in Jasper for Samson, but it’s embryonic. This second short is also all about Jasper becoming more dependent on Samson as he starts making his own decisions, and Samson just supporting ‘his person’. The growing trust between them is solidly portrayed, even though it seems it’s been there for quite a while. Finally, as in the first book, not much more is done to explain Jasper’s powers or how he should cope with them. I could definitely relate to Jasper not wanting to go off his meds when there is no real alternative of him dealing with his seizure-inducing visions! Similarly to the first story there is also no sex at all, implicit or otherwise.

A Sense of Trust, A Sensational Story by Anah Crow and Dianne Fox is a great sequel to the original short Nice: Coming to His Senses. It has the same vaporous feel to it where the reader is thrust in the story and where it’s all about showing instead of explaining the paranormal. The slice of life we’re treated with will definitely make you yearn for more of those wonderful characters.

Nice: Coming to His Senses (Sensational Story, #1) by Anah Crow and Dianne Fox
Publisher: Torquere Press
Genre: M/M, Christmas, historical, paranormal

Review Copy received from Publisher

Summary:
Jasper has never known life outside institutions and hospitals. Necessity leads him to a permanent placement at Raindell, where his doctor begins to suspect that there's nothing the medical establishment can do for him.
Samson has lived his life in a haven for shapeshifters, but he yearns to be with his person. When an elderly telepath meets Samson, he's sure that the troublesome patient of a friend at Raindell is that very person. Jasper just has to hold it together a little longer, and he might find himself face to face with the cure he needs.

Kris’ Review:
At 18 pages, this story by Anah Crow and Dianne Fox is both short and appealing in all its strangeness.
Written in third person and alternating between Samson’s and Jasper’s points of view, the sorry has an ethereal feel. We can immediately tell in whose head we are, with Jasper’s thoughts being a bit naïve, and Samson’s more practical and very much like a dog’s. Both leads are interesting and whet your appetite for more about them and their circumstances.

And therein lies the only point I had contention. Ms. Crow and Ms. Fox have wonderfully woven this universe, but the reader always feels slightly out of their depth because we’re never explained much. While the way the paranormal element is approached is very subtle and alluring, we don’t quite understand how Samson, being a shapeshifter, makes him click with Jasper, or even if that’s the reason they do. The timeframe is also foggy, with the reader not being quite able to understand how much time has passed between one section of the story and the next. This is, however, characteristic of Jasper, who doesn’t have a sense of time. It does plunge us into his head but at the same time, confuses us. The ending also left me a bit wanting, but that’s a good thing because there is more of Jasper and Samson in short sequels!

Ms Crow and Ms. Fox have done a wonderful job at painting the bleak life of Jasper and how he feels trapped in his own mind. Even with limited page space, Jasper’s sense of helplessness is wonderfully conveyed, as is Samson’s emphatic desire to find ‘his person’. This is definitely a story about two souls who have been looking for each other and finally find the other. It is more about comfort than anything else, with no sex or talk of sex whatsoever--there is one sentence about it. But it definitely fits the characters and the overall atmosphere of the story.

Nice: Coming to His Senses, A Sensational Story by Anah Crow and Dianne Fox is a great short story for those of us who like our paranormal intriguing but a little on the subtle side, with a side dish of miserable circumstances that finally get turned around.

Revenant by Connie Bailey

Revenant by Connie Bailey
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Genre: erotic, paranormal, fantasy, M/M

Review Copy received from Publisher

Summary:
Expecting another run-of-the-mill salvage job, Bo Andressen and his crew arrive at a crumbling castle in Wales and walk into a mystery of murder, hidden treasure, and greed with roots in the far past. In cooperating with the local law enforcement, Bo agrees to bring in a psychic, hoping to debunk rumors that the castle is haunted. However, paranormal liaison Tristan Lambert discovers that ghosts are only one suspected danger.
Bo doesn't believe in ghosts, but Tristan is convinced they're dealing with a revenant—a hostile spirit that feeds on sexual energy and will stop at nothing, including possession and coercion, to get it. The arrival of the castle's owner, Sir Rhys Turcotte, with his secretary—who happens to be Bo's ex-lover—complicates an already dangerous situation. Unwittingly bound together by an evil spell, Bo and Tristan seek to unmask the revenant's earthly allies... before more people become victims to an ancient evil seeking rebirth.

Kris’ Review:
Revenant by Connie Bailey clocks in at 208 pages and be assured you’ll be entertained every sentence. It is an extremely well thought-out supernatural story—but while it is an enjoyable read, it could have done with a dash of more finesse.

Ms. Bailey’s expanded novel is particularly rich in plot and has a lot of things happening all the time, very fast. This makes reading Revenant quite suspenseful, as you’ll most likely not be able to put the book down. Ms. Bailey has masterfully introduced a lot of different threads and aspects to the same little Welsh town of Drws Cefnforoedd and its inhabitants—whether transient or temporary—,and weaves a gripping tale that comes together tidily at the end, after a lot of twists and turns.

The characters are all nicely crafted and developed: this is a book with more of an ensemble cast then anything else. Bo and Tristan are as prominent as Sir Alun, the revenant, and his minions. Gavin the constable will win you over almost instantly, and Ardie, Bo’s friend and associate, is simply fantastic. A special mention of Morgan, the special town drunk, is also definitely needed. Ms. Bailey's dialogue is not stilted and any exchanges are true to the characters and the way they’d be speaking if you could hear them out loud, which is quite a feat.

However, that one aspect that makes the strength of this novel also makes its weakness: there were just too many characters, and the limited third person point of view jumps from one to the other. This makes Revenant quite tiring to read in places, and adds to the reader’s confusion. The explanations of what’s actually going on are scarce as each character has a different view and they wait towards the end of the book to communicate and clarify it for us. It can be frustrating as there are quite a few sex scenes where the characters’ feelings and reactions are a bit unbelievable and it is only at the end that we understand why. Finally, there are a few things that seem unnecessary but are still expounded upon: while it is a great way to flesh out secondary characters, it comes across as extraneous in a novel that is plot-driven. The mesh between paranormal and fantasy is also done well but the transition is not very subtle.

I also had some minor quibbles with sentence structure: in this novel Ms. Bailey is very fond of referring to the characters by their jobs, their physical description, or some other attribute instead of their name. But because there are so many characters it just gets confusing—especially during sex scenes with more than one partner. Some of the sex was also prone to fits of purple prose—nothing strong enough that it detracts from the writing, though!

In brief, definitely go for this if you like long and drawn-out plots that mesh true, heavy-handed supernatural phenomena with an ensemble cast that is solid and entertaining. But as a reader, be aware that Revenantby Connie Bailey is not an easy read, coming across as slightly long-winded with a lot going on.

Now that their paths have crossed, Jack and Julian head off in a new direction- but between Jack's reluctance to be open about his sexuality and Julian's shattered self- confidence they can't seem to decide what direction that is. It takes a push from Julian's meddlesome sister to send them tumbling headfirst into romance.
Happily wrapped up in their fledgling relationship, Jack and Julian think they may have found their way until unexpected roadblocks appear on their path to forever. Wrathful storms, dangerous illness, family connections, and broken hearts threaten their tenuous balance and will send them spinning apart- their love scattered to the four winds- if they cannot believe and trust together, they can find true north.

Kathy’s Review:
The writing team of Bethany Brown and Ashlyn Kane has come up with a very enjoyable story and, like other writing teams that I really enjoy, I’m amazed at how seamless the storytelling is.

This is an easy story to read; there’s no huge blowup and no on-the-edge-of-your-seat tension. There are, of course, problems because both Jack and Julian are men... uh, men who’ve lived, loved and lost. They’re living in a relatively small community and being gay, and out, is not a step that they can take lightly. On a side note, the fact that the story takes place in Alberta, where I live, really adds a connection to the characters and the story. It’s very refreshing to read and be able to recognize the places that are in front of you.

When I say the story was easy to read, that’s not to say that I found it boring or bland. On the contrary; I was totally enamored of both Jack and Julian. The road on their way to romance wasn’t an easy ride, but then very little in life is and it felt so right. But I never felt that I needed to escape from what I was reading. And it’s a real treat to just be able to sit back and simply enjoy such a wonderfully told tale.

True North by Bethany Brown and Ashlyn Kane was 100% real. It’s a romance, but it’s also about friendship and about the love of family. It’s about people discovering just who they are, and how others see them. It’s about men realizing that what others think isn’t as important as letting themselves be open to experiences and to appreciate who they are and what they have. This is a story sure to resonate with many people; it definitely did with me. And it’s a treat to discover another author or two whose writing I can sit back and immerse myself in. Wonderful!

The Geography of Murder by P.A. Brown

The Geography of Murder by P.A. Brown
Publisher: MLR Press, LLC
Genre: BDSM, GLBT, M/M, Mystery/Suspense

Review Copy Received from Author

Summary:

Jason Zachary finds himself with a map straight into a murder rap when he runs afoul of Santa Barbara detective Alexander Spider, charged with the murder of a man he's never met.

Jaime's Review:

Every once in a while, you read a story that reaches inside you and touches where you live and breathe. Quite often, you find those moments in the most unlikely places. A while back, I read Ms. Brown's Lynx Woods, and it was a good story. I picked up The Geography of Murder figuring it would be a good, interesting read. I like police procedurals on tv. I like m/m interaction, especially of the D/s flavour. I was way more than pleasantly surprised by what I found in the pages of this so called murder mystery.

I've not read a lot of BDSM, really, and I didn't realize this would be quite so BDSM; it's not something I'm overly familiar with, in life or fiction. There's not a whole lot of explicitness. I didn't miss it even a bit. Ms. Brown has a knack for slotting the sex in where it needs to be, and allowing her folks the privacy of their games when it's appropriate. I did not expect to find, in the pages of a murder mystery, a reflection of life as I know it. Ms. Brown managed not only to tell a tale of murder that kept me thinking throughout, but she laid out the lives and hearts of two characters in such a way I couldn't look away. There were not just Jason and Spider on the page, but feelings and dilemmas I can completely understand because they are just that real.

If you know anything about my reading habits from reading my reviews, you know I like flawed characters. I enjoy watching broken men put themselves back together. I enjoy watching oblivious people find themselves in the last place they ever think to look. Most, though, I enjoy when I come away from a book with the realization I've found a tiny bit of insight into myself from what I've just read. That, I think, is what every author hopes to do, and what so few of us ever manage. It takes excellence to write a story that leaves a reader feeling they've just lived an entire lifetime inside the pages of one story, and come away touched, different in some maybe minute way, but still, changed from the experience. Pat Brown has that rare gift, I think. Or maybe I just read the book at the exact right moment in my life to really appreciate it. Call it kismet if you want, but in my experience, that kind of connection, story to reader, does not happen in a void. It happens because the person writing the story has some serious talent and has done something spectacular. I read a lot of books. Not many leave me quite this entranced.

Jason is, at first blush, a pretty self centered, shallow kid. One might even go so far as to think he's not so likeable. Then he embarks on a journey, almost falling into self discovery without meaning to, but rather than balk, rather than slink away from the truths he's not sure he wants to know about himself, he finds his own personal strength and honesty, and makes the hard choices. Sometimes, walking away is the last thing you want to do, and the first thing you should do. Too often in romance stories, that impossible place of knowing where you belong and knowing you can't stay there is glossed over or ignored altogether in favour of the easy HEA. Ms. Brown doesn't make anything easy here. It takes guts to possibly piss off your readers that much. It takes guts to keep the characters true to themselves and the path you set them on. It pays off, though, because there is nothing so satisfying as a true ending.

Spider is no saint, either. He makes some huge mistakes, and one has to wonder what Ms. Brown was thinking, making him so fallible as to do so much damage to everything he touches. But people aren't perfect, and often, we keep making the same mistakes over and over again, and never figure out why things don't work out as we want them to.

Ms. Brown pushes her characters past their limitations. Like a true Domme, she pushes, pressures them until they break and we see what they are truly capable of. I am amazed to have found a little bit of myself on the pages as I watched these two find themselves. That's not something that happens every day.

One thing I do have to point out, though. I watch a lot (read too much!) tv, and police procedurals are right up there at the top of my favourite shows. What always strikes me is the tiny piece of evidence at the beginning, the thing that seems most insignificant and unrelated to anything else, that ties everything together, and by the time you get to the end and have almost forgotten about it, it pops back up as the mystery comes back full circle to whatever it was everyone almost missed. Well, if that tiny bit of evidence was here, I did miss it. I'm still trying to figure out how Spider makes the final connection. Even once all the dots are joined up, the motivations spelled out, I don't see how Spider figured it out. Could be I was too caught up in the romantic melt down by then to care as much about the mystery, or it could be it wasn't actually there. I'm not sure. Tell you what, though. This is one book I will definitely go back and read again. Maybe I'll see what I missed.

My Recommendation:

Whether you like cops, a bit of BDSM, or just to see what makes people tick, this is a fantastic book.

Wild Hearts: Blood Moon Legacy by Rhea Regale

Review Copy received from Publisher

Summary:
When Shyla Smith learns of her grandfather’s death, she travels to Hood River to put his estate in order. Shyla’s not thrilled with staying at his humble cabin in the middle of a forest, and when a welcoming committee of four wild wolves greets her at the front door, she all but runs back to New York City. Nothing could have prepared her for the secrets which were about to unfold.
Coal Demmering and Jacy Roddery are the spiritually appointed mates to Shyla. The problem? They need to convince a city woman she belonged with them in Hood River, she descends from a highly revered white wolf bloodline, and a rebel pack of wolves has her marked for death.
With Coal and Jacy filling her nights with passion and her days with danger, will Shyla finally submit to the call of her wild heart?

Deb’s Review:
Wild Hearts: Blood Moon Legacy by Rhea Regale is a story that moved at a fast pace. The plotline grabs your attention and holds you to the book till you turn the last page. I was hypnotized. Ms. Regale, why this story line? Is there any truth to the white wolf legend?

Coal is dark and serious, his inner battle with his feelings for Shyla you just feel. Jacy is truly a jokester, he made me laugh. With these two alphas being as different as night and day, I get the feeling Shyla is in for some good lovin’.
There are so many characters associated with this book. Ms. Regale what character gave you the hardest time writing? I found Coal to be hard to connect with. With his moods, they threw me. Will he be able to handle being a trio? Jacy is easier on me as a reader. Laid back, but don’t for a minute think he is soft. For me as a reviewer/reader, I found myself having a time with Shyla’s character. I would have liked to see her character adjusting more to her inner wolf. With this being book one, I consider this the ground work for the series.

Laela, head of the wolves, doesn’’t take kindly to people testing her leadership. It will be interesting to see what Ms. Regale comes up with for book #2. I have a feeling we have not seen the last of Laela. It is going to be interesting enough to read the next books to see where this series goes. Ms. Regale could not have created a better villain, Laela scares even me.

What I learned from this story is the white wolf Alpha female is large and in charge. Will we see Shyla come into her powers more in the next book? It is an answer I cannot wait to read. If you like hot paranormals, then Wild Hearts by Rhea Regale is a book you must pick up.
